Introduction
Assessments and evaluations are used to determine whether
or not what has been taught is being obtained and learned. The article “Why is Assessment Important?” (2006) states;
Assessment
is important because of all the decisions you will make about children when
teaching and caring for them.
For the learner
educators need to use assessments during each quarter or each semester to
ensure that students have knowledge of the information that has been presented
to them. Assessments can be used to help educators create their future lesson
plans. Educators must ensure that the assessments given are accurate and
current with what they are teaching the students in their class.
Original
Assignment
In the learners’
original assignment, the learner proposed that the staff working at Black
Street Early Childhood Center give preschool aged students assessments before
accepting the students into the school. The reason for the assessments would be
to allow the teachers to see in advance what their potential students know
coming into the program. By giving an assessment in advance teachers are able
to see what students are capable of, they can then place the students based on
the assessments. After all assessments were done, the teachers would input all
scores into the schools’ computer system. All scores would be placed into the
computer system and students would then be chosen based on their assessment
scores. These scores would then help
assist teachers with creating their lesson plans.
Revised
Assignment
In the original assignment the learner realized that
there was no questionnaire for the parents to complete. When it comes to
children who are preschool aged many times parents are the best way to receive
certain information. They can answer all the personal questions needed for
their child. This way while the child is testing they too can be busy and not
worrying about how their child is doing on the assessment. The learner would
also allow portions of the assessment to be done with the teacher leading the
student but allowing the student to work on a IPad. Students in today’s society
tend to be technology efficient so allowing them the use of a technology can
ease them from being nervous while completing the assessment.
The challenge associated with the assignment was going
back and realizing the mistakes that were made. For the learner, this course
has given the learner the opportunity to go back and see where mistakes were
made and why the grade fit the assignment. Program Outcome Six and Seven were
both used in the redesign of the assignment. Outcome 7 deals with
communication, being that many students are going to be hesitant to talk to an
adult they do not know; the learner felt this is where communication with the
parents is vital.
Conclusion
Assessments for
the learner should always be a vital part of any educators’ process.
Assessments for the learner are the grounds for which the educators will based
their activities and set learning goals for their students. Technologies can be
implemented into the plans to gather information and promote learning from another
source. Technologies also gives educators a way to implement group work.
Assessments should always be created based on the age group that one is working
with.
